ORDINANCE NO. 2161 ORDINANCE REPEALING ARTICLE II, CHAPTER 3 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD RELATING TO SIGNS AND ADDING ARTICLE II, CHAPTER 3 TO THE CODE OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY RELATING TO SIGNS Section 1. Article II ("Signs") of Chapter 3 of the Code of the City of Redwood City is hereby repealed. Section 2. Article II ("Signs") is hereby added to Chapter 3 of the Code of the City of Redwood City to read as follows: "ARTICLE II SIGNS

Under Canopy Signs, Advertising Artwork and <br /> Blade Signs <br /> <br /> Other Building Signs ( for reasons other than Four years ** <br /> non-conforming sign area)* <br /> Freestanding Signs and All Other Signs Seven (7) years <br /> <br /> * A building fa(;ade where the combined area of signs exceeds the limitation set <br /> forth in Section 3.78a ("Sign Area") of this Article. <br /> <br /> ** The sign area in excess of the limitation set forth in Section 3.78a (Sign Area) of <br /> this Article shall be reduced by 25% per year. <br /> <br />Section 3.131. Abatement. Unless otherwise approved by the City in writing, the <br />abatement of any sign shall be accomplished in the following manner: <br /> <br /> a, Painted Signs. Signs painted on building walls, fences and other <br /> improvements shall be abated by removal of the paint constituting the sign or <br /> by permanently painting over the sign in the same color as the adjacent <br /> surface in a manner whereby no portion of the sign is thereafter visible. A <br /> sign permit shall not be required from the City for the work that is performed <br /> in accordance with the provisions of this section. <br /> <br /> b. Other Signs. Any sign, other than a painted sign, shall be abated by <br /> removal of the sign or by its modification, alteration or replacement. A sign <br /> permit shall be obtained from the City prior to the modification, alteration or <br /> replacement of any nonconforming sign. <br /> <br />Section 3.132. Historical Signs. Notwithstanding the provisions of this Division, any <br />historical sign that complies with the provisions of this section shall be exempt from the <br />requirement that the sign be removed or altered to conform to the requirements this <br />Article upon approval of an historical sign permanent. A request for approval of an <br />historical sign permit shall be made by filing a sign permit application as set forth in <br />Division 2 ("Permits") of this Article. The Architectural Review Committee, based upon <br />a recommendation by the Historic Resources Advisory Committee, shall have the <br />authority to approve an historical sign permit upon making the following findings: <br /> <br /> a. The sign was installed at least fifty (50) years prior to the effective date of the <br /> ordinance adding this Article to the Code of the City of Redwood City and/or it <br /> reflects the unique historical characteristics of the development and heritage of <br /> Redwood City; <br /> <br /> b. The sign reflects exemplary technology, craftsmanship or design that is indicative <br /> of the time period in which the sign was constructed; <br /> <br />sharedlshared/Council/Ord <br /> <br />Signordl 6/7/99r <br /> 28 2161 <br /> <br /> <br />
