ORDINANCE ADDING CHAPTER 15 TO THE CODE OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY RELATING TO SMOKING REGULATION THE COUNCIL OF REDWOOD CITY DOES ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: SECTION I. Chapter 15 is hereby added to the Code of the City of Redwood City to read as follows: "Chapter 15. Smoking Regulation "Section 15.I. Findings and Purpose. <br /> DFS:djk 04/12/88 (#6) <br /> 1 ;: djk 05/16/88R <br /> DES:djk 06/06/88R <br /> " (e) Numerous studies have shown that a majority of <br />both nonsmokers and smokers desire to have restrictions on <br />smoking in public places and places of employment; and <br /> " (f) Smoking is a documented cause of fires, and <br />cigarette and cigar burns and ash stains on merchandise and <br />fixtures cause economic losses to businesses. <br /> " (g) Accordingly, the Council of Redwood City finds and <br />declares that the purposes of this ordinance are to: 1) <br />protect the public health and welfare by prohibiting smoking <br />in public places except in designated smoking areas, and by <br />regulating smoking in places of employment; and 2) strike a <br />reasonable balance between the needs of smokers and the need <br />of nonsmokers to breathe smoke-free air, and to recognize <br />that, where these needs conflict, the need to breathe <br />smoke-free air shall have priority." <br /> "Section 15.2. Definitions. <br /> The following words and phrases, whenever used in this <br />Chapter, shall have the meanings respectively ascribed <br />thereto: <br /> " (a) 'Bar' means an area which is devoted to the <br />serving of alcoholic beverages and in which the service of <br />food is only incidental to the consumption of such <br />beverages. <br /> " (b) 'Business' means any sole proprietorship, <br />partnership, joint venture, corporation or other business <br />entity formed for profit-making purposes, including retail <br />establishments where goods or services are sold or rendered <br /> 2 <br /> " ' -.-...., .~, <br />
