PROTECT OUR YOUTH FROM FLAVORED TOBACCO
Tobacco Education Program - A Social Justice Project
The San Mateo County Tobacco Education Coalition and Bay Area Community Health
Advisory Council (formerly African American Community Health Advisory Committee) (BACHAC)
ore working together to:
• Reduce youth tobacco use,
• End flavored tobacco marketing targeted to our our youth, and
• Restrict the sale of flavored tobacco products.
The tobacco industry is addicting a whole new generation of kids, using more than 15,000
flavors like gummy bear, cotton candy, and chocolate. In many cases, the packaging even
mimics that of popular candy brands. The tobacco industry is especially targeting our youth
who are from communities of color and/or are LGBTQ.
We are working with s.Truth Ambassadors/Youth Advocates - youth advocates are
committed to telling the truth about the harmful affects our the health - to reach youth of
color and/or LGBTQ in our targeted communities of East Palo Alto. Menlo Park, and Redwood
City. They will:
1. Receive monthly Tobacco Education Training and continuous project support;
2. Share about the harmful affects of flavored tobacco with their peers.
3. Partner with San Mateo Tobacco Education Coalition & BACHAC to educate and raise
awareness with city officials and community members; and
4. Advocate with City Councils to update their Tobacco Retail License ordinances to
include a flavored tobacco sales restriction in physical locations.
Our Youth Advocate Lead will work closely with Truth Ambassadors for the next 2 years
(2018-2020). Below are the three Youth Advocate Leads coaching and supporting the youth.
Tajo Henderson
Black Student Union
Sequoia Union High School
Sherindo Bryant
Black Student
Menlo Atherton High School
As we grow our program, we want local leaders and other adults to be part of our Collective
Truth Circle - group of adults who support the Tobacco Education Program and support our
Youth Advocates' voice as they educate their peers about the harmful effects of flavored
tobacco on their health. The Circle respects and provides space for our youth voice to be
heard; and partners with our Youth Advocate Leads.
We thank you in advance for your support.
