1017 Middlefield Road
Redwood City, CA 94063
Dear Councilmember Mayor Bain,
I am fortunate to call Redwood City my hometown for the past twenty-three years and having the opportunity to have
worked at an elementary school for thirteen years, allowed me to get to know the students and families and their
stories.
The difficult part was understanding why parents would miss a school or community meeting not once, but on various
occasions and I learned that parents were working two jobs to pay the rent and other bills and could not attend school
meetings. Our stories are ours to tell... parents have been eager to speak out about their stories and standing in truth
to the pain and struggle they're facing while remaining grateful to have a second job.
Rent increases are damaging to the family unit... parents are struggling to pay the rent in Redwood City and what is
alarming is that not only the adults are being affected, but also the children attending schools in grades as early as
Kinder through High School. Is it wrong to provide our families with a roof over their heads, a warm place to come
home during the cold winter season? It seems so, as time has progressed and third parties continue to be involved, the
capability of families to provide the very basic need for themselves and family has grown to the magnitude of
unattainability.
Honorable Councilmember Mayor Bain long-time residents are forced to move out leaving families and friends with
whom they have built relationships in the community, such as churches and schools behind in a city known for its
Climate Best, Redwood City. Let families who are still here in the city they love and call home the opportunity to stay.
I ask that you please vote on Monday night for the 'urgency ordinance' to protect our renters from unjust evictions.
Each one of you is the key we need to continue building the beloved community of Redwood City, a city that all can call
'Home'.
Be the person that understands that renters deserve to live with dignity.
Thanks for your time in reading this message.
Sincerely,
Cynthia Hinestroza
Community Member
P.O. Box 1374
Redwood City, CA 94064
