78
Page 3

The breakdown of average costs per six-session CERT class is as follows:

Supplies backpack, $25/student:
Binder and training materials, $20/student:
Fire Extinguishers:
Supplies for CERT drill:
Department Instructor Costs:
Total anticipated average cost, without donations:

$1,250
$1,000
$500
$1,000
$3,500
$7,250

The Fire Department has been working with the City Manager's office to facilitate the
use of Neighborhood Liaisons as an information source for CERT team members and
disaster preparedness coordinators. Additionally, staff has included the CERT members
in the "Code Red" telephone notification system. There are 83 members on the
notification list.

FISCAL IMPACT
The Fire Department's operating budget does not currently include dedicated funding
for the CERT or Are You Ready? programs. Each class has an approximate cost of
$7,250 per session. The city does not charge for the program and most of the costs
have been borne by the donations from the San Mateo County OES. The instructor
costs have been paid out of the Fire Department budget. It is not likely that the San
Mateo County OES will continue to be able to provide funding, so staff will bring
recommendations to Council in the context of the next two-year budget process.

~~~_:
Geoffrey Balton .
Battalion Chief
~
Peter Ingram
Interim City Manager
(' .~ -
./~.lner
i_~/ Interim Fire Chief
ATTACHMENTS
None
RELATED DOCUMENTS IN CITY CLERK'S OFFICE
None
