<br />88 <br />Page 42 <br /> <br />Other Models of Librarv Service <br /> <br />Library staff contacted other libraries in California and across the United States to <br />research and analyze the types of programs and services that these libraries provide to the <br />Spanish speaking community within their respective areas. <br /> <br />Many commonalities appeared amongst the libraries. The libraries playa central role in <br />the community life of many people within the Spanish speaking community. The library <br />serves a safe-haven for children. Programs for children in the library are a major <br />attraction and in turn, bring the parents of the children in the library, who discover the <br />wealth of programs and services the library has to offer. Libraries serve as a liaison to <br />services within the community. An adequate supply of computers in the library is <br />essential. Collaboration with community organizations leads to the success of libraries. <br />Cultural programs throughout the year enrich the lives of all within the community. <br />Adult learning classes and resources such as ESL and GED playa vital role in the library <br />and enhance the lives of participants. Libraries provide basic literacy skills to the <br />community, in all fonnats. Outreach within the community is necessary at any level that <br />can be provided.
