Visitor attractions are often a <br />key factor. <br />■ Connections to regional transit: Caltrain is a good <br />example. <br />■ Station accessibility: The area needs to be walkable <br />and destinations easily reached without having to <br />cross barriers such as major highways. <br />■ Travel time savings: The service needs to be faster <br />than walking and competitive with shuttle bus speeds. <br />■ Comfort and convenience: Stations need to be <br />attractive and secure, service needs to be frequent and <br />cover most of the day. <br />■ Cost Factors: Streetcar systems are capital intensive <br />by nature, but it is important to avoid problems which <br />would unduly increase the costs, such as conflicts with <br />utilities, major bridges or structures and right of way <br />acquisition. Successful systems have low fares or are <br />free which is essential when the distances covered are <br />relatively short. <br />Successful streetcar systems include: Portland, Seattle, <br />Tucson and Detroit. <br />Urban Circulators <br />Cities that have implemented urban circulator projects can <br />experience similar benefits to streetcars.
