I have never seen anything like this in my personal or professional life including SARS. The single biggest thing you can do to stop the spread of this virus is to encourage social distancing. This does not need to mean that business grinds to a halt. I have been in meetings all day, done presentations and made eye contact and had side -bars with my colleagues without leaving my home office. There are a number of excellent*, low cost, user friendly web conference programs that will allow council to meet and to continue to solicit community input without exposing our community to unnecessary risk. I would encourage you to consider these options. I realize that you already have the ability to broadcast digitally. I would encourage you to also implement the ability to interact and receive community comment digitally. It's 2020 and we are in the heart of Silicon Valley. We have the tools to solve this problem. I also believe that there is an under appreciation of how effective ordinary hand washing with regular soap and hot water is in combating this virus. The hand sanitizer is gone and there is price gouging when soap will work fine. This should be communicated as well. This crisis has been a boon to big box stores but devastating for our smaller, locally owned businesses. The hardest hit in our community are dealing with the combination of crowding due to high housing costs and the inability to take sick leave as our nation does not guarantee this basic occupational protection. Those in service jobs do not have the luxury of working from home. I would encourage you to think the most about these individuals in our community. They don't typically come to council but they will be the hardest hit by this crisis. I look forward to hearing what action you will take to protect our community.
