From: Nicole Pedersen
To: GRP -City Council; PublicComment
Subject: DO NOT CLOSE BRIDGE PARKWAY IN RWS
Date: Friday, April 24, 2020 1:56:38 PM
Hello council members,
I've learned the City is considering closing BRIDGE PARKWAY in Redwood Shores (RWS) to vehicle
traffic under authority granted by the SIP Order. I urge the City to reconsider.
Bridge Parkway is one of only three ways that RWS residents can connect from Marine Parkway to
Redwood Shores Parkway, and is the safest given it has wide pedestrian walkways on either side. (Shell
and Twin Dolphin have sidewalks on only one side, so pedestrians cannot maintain social distance when
passing.) It also has two lanes in each direction, for better traffic control and flow. Bridge Parkway is
located optimally for the majority of RWS residents on the Marine Parkway side to access our nearest
marketplace, whereas Twin Dolphin Drive overshoots the marketplace, and Shell is less of a straight shot.
Moreover, I understand there is also a contract in the council agenda for approval to pave Twin Dolphin
Drive, which would remove that connector road for a period of time. If this is approved, we will see a high
increase of additional traffic throughout the Shores and drivers will be funneled to an already very unsafe
intersection at Shell and Marine (where cars do not consistently stop for pedestrians) and as Shell is a
one lane road rather than two lane, with narrow sidewalks on only one side of the road, this would
actually create more unsafe conditions and added confusion for all Redwood Shores residents and
people making deliveries in Redwood Shores while we SIP at home.
As an alternative, it would be quite simple to make the pedestrian paths on Bridge
Parkway directional to allow for social distancing, without disrupting traffic patterns.
Each pathway should mirror the flow of vehicle traffic on that side. Bike riders should
continue to exercise proper rules of the road and adhere to all stops and signals.
These changes can be reinforced by way of RSCA email, signboards and next-door.
Bottom line - Bridge Parkway needs to stay open for cars. It is a vital path for
those who live off Marine Parkway to access our closest marketplace.
Finally, on the agenda, I understand there's a plan to support RWC schools, but only in the main part of
RWC. Sandpiper and RWS are not mentioned. As RWS residents pay taxes and fees to RWC, our two
community schools should have the same consideration if City funds are being used.
Thank you for your consideration.
Nicole Pedersen
