CLK-Pamela Aguilar
From: Stacy Koo <stacykoo@gmail.com>
Sent: Monday, May 4, 2020 1:36 PM
To: GRP -City Council
Cc: Matt Young
Subject: 5/4 City Council Mtg: Financial support for home -base child care providers
This e-mail is from an external source. Please do not open attachments or click links from an unknown or
suspicious origin. 05.r,21
May 4, 2020
To: Redwood City Council Members
Re: COVID-19 support for home-based child care providers
I recently learned about the San Mateo City Council's decision to give $120,000 in rent relief to home-based
child care providers in the city that have been affected by COVID-19. I understand this topic is scheduled to be
on the City Council's May 4th meeting agenda and that comments are welcome in advance. We are writing to
you as parents and as Redwood City homeowners to express our support of a similar program for Redwood
City home-based child care providers.
Finding and securing affordable and reliable child care in this area is extremely difficult and competitive. We
have a 22 -month old enrolled in a state licensed home-based daycare in Redwood City, which we love. Our
daycare has been closed since the shelter -in-place order was implemented in March. We, along with other
parents, have continued to pay tuition for April and May (although slightly modified) in order to support our
child care provider's operating budget and to maintain our spot at the daycare.
There is an additional burden put on parents juggling working from home with no child care, while still having
to pay monthly tuition for care. If Redwood City can offer financial support to home-based child care
providers, it will benefit both providers and parents. As full-time working parents with no family in the area,
we are completely dependent on having safe and reliable child care. If child care providers are forced to close
due to a lack of funding, it will have negative and lasting effects on parents, families, and businesses. We need
more child care providers in the area, not less.
As mentioned, we are Redwood City homeowners with a growing family, we care deeply about Redwood
City's future. Making investments in child care today will attract more young families and businesses to our
city tomorrow. Please consider providing financial assistance to home-based child care providers in Redwood
City because the decision can also result in economic opportunities that will help our city thrive for years to
come.
Thank you for considering our comments and your attention on this important issue.
Best regards,
Matt and Stacy Young
Redwood City, CA
