Economists have estimated that nearly sixty percent of job losses during this
pandemic have come from food and hospitality businesses. In response, numerous Bay Area cities are
reimagining their use of their public space for outdoor seating and services to enable sufficient social
distancing for the safety of their employees and the public.
As the Shelter in Place (SIP) order continues and some restrictions are eased to provide the ability for
more businesses to operate or businesses to expand operations, staff is looking for innovative ways to
help Redwood City small business successfully operate under these conditions. The public health orders
will likely continue to significantly limit indoor space for their patrons for many weeks, and likely months.
We cannot expect restaurants to survive with indoor operations at half capacity or less. As this report was
developed, outdoor dining was not allowed, however, the Shelter in Place order is being revised effective
June 6, 2020 to allow outdoor dining with safety measures and other restrictions to ensure social
distancing.
City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.ore
541
