thought of was "did you get his name." I realize that is a privilege to imagine that knowing
his name would make a difference. She was scared for her life - there was no way she was
going to ask the person who held ALL THE POWER in that situation for his credentials.
She has friends at the police department and asked them to look for a record of it. Of
course there was no record. How often does it happen that residents are harassed by the
police for NO REASON.
It is hard to imagine that she was harassed for any reason other than Walking While
Black.
Should we allocate more money towards police reform?
Body cameras, diversity training and training on appropriate use of force don't work. They
did not stop the murder of an unarmed black man Chinedu Okobi by the Sheriff's
Department, Mali Watkins, arrested by Alameda police for exercising, the use of tear gas and
rubber bullets in Oakland... and the list goes on and on. Let's not wait until Redwood City Police
Department makes headlines for something similar. Reform and training is not enough.
There is significant scholarship documenting the local and national history of
unequal treatment of residents by the police - with respect to which neighborhoods they
patrol, which crimes they enforce, and against whom and how severely they use force. The
police culture is one that was built on being above the law. We cannot continue to fund a
system that allows
The murder of Rayshard Brooks last week occurred by an officer wearing a body
camera. Bans on chokeholds do not work, as the police killing of Eric Garner
reminds us - he was killed by an illegal chokehold. We need to redirect the funds
immediately.
I want a city that is safe for everyone. We cannot wait to take meaningful action until
October: the future of public safety is a future of prevention, by community services and
unarmed specialists, rather than punishment backed by armed force and incarceration.
Please listen to the public outcry and take a stand to reorient our city to this future.
Thank you for your time,
Marina Rose
539 Flynn Ave
Redwood City, CA 94063
