CLK-Pamela Aguilar
From: Molly Tinney <mollytinney@gmail.com>
Sent: Saturday, August 8, 2020 10:36 PM
To: GRP -City Council
Subject: BLM Mural Agenda Item 8A August 10th 2020
Dear Council,
I have lived in Redwood City for 35 years. My great grandparents settled here in 1892. 1 worked at Sequoia Hospital as a
nurse for 30 years. I am proud of my city.
I would like to express my support of installing another BLM mural or monument. I was very disappointed that the prior
one was removed and I am not sure we can rebuild trust that the City truly supports BIPOC, but by installing a new
mural, with some sort of celebration, would go a long way in rebuilding bridges. I believe an apology form the council for
how the situation was handled will go a long way in mending fences; it would be so much more effective than being
defensive or giving excuses as to why the mural was removed. BLM is not a political statement, as is MAGA 2020. BLM is
a basic human rights issue. The mural is no more of a distraction to drivers (especially since most of Broadway is closed)
than a sign hanging on a street pole or overpass.
It is not just the mural or monument that is important, but the day to day actions and policy changes that will lead to
some kind of systemic change.
We have this moment, a moment that is ripe to truly effect some change, I hope that Redwood City can be on the
forefront of history.
Thank you,
Molly Tinney, District 2
