CLK-Pamela Aguilar
From: Paul Maloa <paulmaloa@gmail.com>
Sent: Sunday, August 9, 2020 11:39 PM
To: GRP -City Council
Subject: BLM Mural downtown Redwood City
Dear City Council Members,
In speaking with members and parents of the community, we think it's clear that we'd like the city of Redwood City to
take a stand for civil rights and find a permanent home for a BLM mural. when it comes to the history books, Redwood
City wants to be among the cities that find racial equity and equality important and not among the city of onlookers,
who are afraid to stand for what's right. There are people in cities like our own, who are fighting to make this message
clear about a basic human right.
Black Lives Matter, isn't a political agenda and Black Lives Matter to both sides of the aisle, whether your a democrat or
a republican. Black Lives Matter, period. No one is running for president under the banner or looking to be elected
because of Redwood City agrees with a basic civil and human right that a black life matters as much as any other life of a
lighter complexion.
Originally, it was placed downtown with removable chalk that would eventually wash away. Never did I expect a city
council members to secretly remove something that was already short term. Never would I expect a council to be
swayed by one persons opinion, unrelated to the message that Black Lives Matter. I'm discouraged that you would be so
easily influenced because of someone's biased and political agenda being used to downplay and discredit a human rights
issue. It shows that you're not listening, but being reactive and not responsive. It shows that you're easily swayed when
something threatens your comfort. It also shows that you weren't standing with any message, but swaying with every
message, in an attempt to please everyone. This is also very discouraging.
I come to you today in hopes that we as parents can make the right decision and tell our kids we stood for the right
thing, when it mattered the most, so they don't have to. Our children already have their own obstacles to overcome
because of the bad choices we've made as parents and leaders in our community. Please don't let this fall into the "bad
decisions" category and add to the list of things our children will have to overcome, thank you.
Concerned parent,
Paul M.
