8.A. - Page 4 of 11 <br />RESOLUTION NO. <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD <br />CITY DECLARING THAT BLACK LIVES MATTER AND REAFFIRMING <br />THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY'S COMMITMENT TO RACIAL EQUITY <br />WHEREAS, our country has a long and troubling history of racism, racially <br />motivated violence, and unequal justice; and <br />WHEREAS, recent deeply disturbing events, including the senseless killings of <br />people of color across our country, have awakened many Americans to this injustice and <br />spurred a new level of determination to create a better society; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Council, on behalf of the community, stands in solidarity with <br />its black residents and communities of color and is committed in word and deed to the <br />principle that all Black Lives Matter and that all lives matter only when all lives matter <br />equally; and <br />WHEREAS, Congressman John Lewis knew that America hasn't reached its <br />potential, and worked tirelessly throughout his life for equal opportunity and equal justice, <br />uplifting underrepresented voices through non-violent action, and working to bring this <br />country closer to our highest ideals; and <br />WHEREAS, Redwood City is not immune to injustices including racism, sexism, <br />anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, and other forms of bias or discrimination; and <br />WHEREAS, members of the City Council believe in the values of equity, equal <br />justice and equal opportunity, and are dedicated to diversity, inclusion and equal justice <br />as core parts of who we are and what we stand for, and we recognize that we can always <br />do better; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City is committed to educating and celebrating <br />the accomplishments and contributions of all people of color to America's history; and <br />WHEREAS, as an organization, the City of Redwood City is committed to <br />improving diversity in its hiring practices, promotions within City departments, and <br />appointments to City boards, committees and commissions, as well as rooting out all <br />forms of bias, discrimination or harassment within City government, wherever that may <br />exist; and <br />ATTY/RESO.0077/CC RESO BLACK LIVES MATTER <br />REV: 08-06-2020 VR <br />Page 1 of 2 <br />79 <br />
