S.A. - Page 1 of 10 <br />/<�ik <br />Redwood <br />CitylCallifornia <br />Faunded 1867 <br />A,&/ <br />DATE: August 17, 2020 <br />SUBJECT <br />STAFF REPORT <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br />Consideration of whether to appoint the only candidate for City Council in District 4, Michael Smith, to <br />the office of City Council, District 4, or to proceed with an election in Council District 4 on November 3, <br />2020 <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Consider adopting a resolution appointing the only candidate in City Council District 4, Michael Smith, to <br />the office of Redwood City City Council, District 4, for a term of four years, or proceed with an election in <br />Council District 4. <br />STRATEGIC PLAN GUIDING PRINCIPLE <br />Excellence in Government Operations <br />BACKGROUND <br />On June 8, 2020, the City Council adopted Resolution No. 15847 (Attachment A) calling for the City of <br />Redwood City to hold a General Municipal Election on November 3, 2020 in order to elect City Council <br />members in City Council Districts 1, 3, 4, and 7. The candidate nomination period for City Council <br />candidates was July 13, 2020 through Friday, August 7, 2020. <br />ANALYSIS <br />At the close of the candidate nomination period on Friday, August 7, 2020, only one eligible candidate had <br />been nominated by the electors in City Council District 4.
