6.B. - Page 1 of 22
/<ik
Redwood
CitylCallifornia
Faunded 1867
Ago/
DATE: August 24, 2020
SUBJECT
STAFF REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
Agreement with Sonic Telecom, LLC for the installation of fiber optic facilities in Redwood City
RECOMMENDATION
By motion, approve and authorize the City Manager to execute an agreement with Sonic Telecom, LLC for
the installation of fiber optic facilities in Redwood City.
STRATEGIC PLAN GUIDING PRINCIPLE
Excellence in Government Operations
BACKGROUND
Sonic Telecom, LLC (Sonic) provides communications infrastructure services, including fiber and
bandwidth connectivity. The California Public Utility Commission issued Sonic a Certificate of Public
Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) to provide telecommunication services throughout the state of
California. The CPCN gives Sonic authority at a state level to operate in the public right-of-way in
accordance with its terms.
In the last several months, Sonic approached City staff to install, maintain and operate its facilities within
Redwood City in accordance with its CPCN. The CPCN allows installation of Sonic facilities in the Redwood
City public right-of-way in a manner similar to telephone and cable companies. Sonic facilities would
include fiber optic communication lines that allow its customers to communicate with data centers,
exchange information, and access the internet.
City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.ore
11
