CENTER FOR
INDEPENDENCE
of Individuals with Disabilities
Serving San Mateo County
October 9 , 2020
The Honorable Mayor Diane Howard and City Council
City of Redwood City Via email to coun-
cil redwood city.orq
Re: Support for initiation of planning for 2300 Broadway/609 Price
Dear Mayor Howard and City Council members:
On behalf of Center For Independence of Independence of individuals with Disabilities, I urge
you to approve the initiation of the planning process for the mixed use project proposed for
2300 Broadway and 609 Price Avenue.
Center for Independence of Individuals with Disabilities mission is to provide support services,
community awareness, and systems change advocacy to promote full and equal community
integration and participation for people with disabilities.
The 81 new affordable housing apartments, to be developed by Mid -Pen Housing at 609 Price,
are urgently needed in Redwood City, particularly by the City's residents with intellectual and
developmental disabilities. Redwood City is home to 680 people with intellectual and devel-
opmental disabilities who receive services from the Golden Gate Regional Center. 264 of
these residents are under 18 and live in families who are struggling financially to remain in
Redwood City and to avoid displacement and disruption of their disabled child's special educa-
tion program and services. 416 of these individuals are adults with developmental disabilities,
most of whom are living at home with aging parents. Many Redwood City adults with devel-
opmental disabilities remain at home with aging parents only because of the inability to secure
an affordable apartment in their home community where they grew up and have formal and in-
formal support networks.
SAN MATEO (MAIN OFFICE) SAN BRUNO (BRANCH OFFICE)
2001 Winward Way, Suite 103, San Mateo, CA 94404 1590 EI Camino Real, Suite C, San Bruno, CA 94066
Tel: (650)645-1780 Fax: (650)645-1785 TTY: (650)522-9313 Tel: (650)589-8994 Fax: (650) 589-8995 TTY: (650)589-8170
www.cidsanmateo.org
