From: Redwood City Firefighters
To: Council -Diane Howard
Subject: Responding to Our Call
Date: Tuesday, October 27, 2020 9:04:37 PM
Our Citizens, Our Community, Our Redwood City Family
On Thursday October 22, Redwood City Firefighters were informed by the City
Manager that in 4 days she would be presenting to the Redwood City Council a revised
budget update for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. In that proposal, Your Redwood City Fire
Department was asked to cut $2.05 million dollars from our budget and ultimately
close down Engine 9. Feeling defeated, we instantly turned to our Community, City
Council, and Leaders asking you to act in good consciousness, and answer our call
for immediate help.
To our citizens, our community, and our Redwood City FAMILY whom we have sworn
to protect: THANK YOU! We are humbled by the selfless engagement you showed us
over this past weekend. When we needed you most, you responded. And when we
called, you answered. You responded with hundreds if not thousands of emails, phone
calls, conversations, and public comments during the Council meeting; unquestioning
love and support swept through entire neighborhoods. It was your dedication and
commitment that laid the foundation for the actions taken at the Council meeting
on Monday.
To our City Council. To Mayor Diane Howard, Vice Mayor Shelly Masur, council
members Giselle Hale, Alicia C. Aguirre, Janet Borgens, Diana Reddy, and Ian Bain.
THANK YOU! We know you joined our members and residents in reaching out to the
City Manager between Thursday and Monday, leading her to bring a new proposal to
Council at the meeting which no longer called for the closure of Engine 9. We are
grateful for the conversations you had with so many of us. You expressed support for
the fire service, and you acknowledged that closing down the busiest engine in the
City, let alone the County, especially during COVID-19 and fire season, would be
unconscionable. And you backed those statements up with a unanimous vote of
support. To all our residents that emailed Council about saving Engine 9, please email
them once again and thank them for ensuring it remained open: council(a)redwoodcity.org
