8.B. - Page 3 of 66 <br />The home has a notable architectural design from the Bay Area Tradition late second phase and is an <br />inventive and distinctive example of mid -20th century domestic architecture (Criterion C) and also was <br />designed by a notable architect, Edwin Wadsworth (Criterion D). It embodies distinctive characteristics of <br />a style, type, period or method of construction, or is a valuable example of the use of indigenous materials <br />or craftsmanship. The vertical redwood siding, broad eaves of the gabled roof, and exposed rafters are <br />distinct architectural elements characteristic of second phase Bay Area Tradition. <br />Figure 2: Image of Ray and Nita Sprangler <br />The project could be eligible for the California Register of Historic Places under Criteria 2 and 3. Because <br />the home was associated with both Ray and Nita Sprangler, who were both important in the history of <br />Redwood City and San Mateo County, the project could be eligible under Criteria 2 of the California <br />Register. Ray Sprangler was a publisher of Redwood City's newspaper, the Tribune, which was well <br />regarded in Redwood City. Nita Sprangler was very active in preserving open space and historic resources. <br />The home could also be eligible under Criteria 3 of the California Register because the home embodies <br />distinctive characteristics of the Bay Area Tradition, as defined by historian David Gebhard. The home uses <br />vertical redwood siding, broad eaves in the gabled roof, and exposed rafters. The flat -roofed covering of <br />the entrance porch are also elements characteristic of mid -20th century domestic architecture. <br />Properties designated as historic landmarks are protected from demolition, alteration, removal, or <br />relocation unless reviewed and recommended by the HRAC and then approved by the Planning <br />Commission at a public hearing.
