8.B. - Page 38 of 66 <br />William Kostura, Historic Resource Evaluation for 970 Edgewood Road <br />Finally, the third phase, as defined by Gebhard, includes more radically modern "wood - <br />sheathed vertical box" houses by Esherick, Charles Moore, William Turnbull, and others. <br />These houses depart from the horizontal emphasis of the second phase. <br />Integrity <br />The house and carport by Edwin Wadsworth date to 1959, the garage was added by <br />Wadsworth in 1966, and a small addition was made on the west side of the house, also by <br />Wadsworth, in 1978. The only other change to the house has been the installation of a <br />sliding glass door in an anodized aluminum frame at an unknown date. This alteration is <br />in the projecting rear entrance. The rear entrance is an important part of the house <br />design, but the anodized aluminum door is only a small part of this side of the house. <br />Accordingly, the property retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, <br />feeling, and association. <br />Regarding setting: At an unknown date the landscape architect Geraldine Knight Scott <br />devised a landscape plan for the property. Her plan survives, but it does not state which <br />landscape elements were existing and which would be new. At present it is not possible <br />to state with clarity what the integrity of the house's setting is. <br />Evaluation <br />Evaluation under Criterion 1 of the California Register: Resources that are associated <br />with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of local or <br />regional history, or the cultural heritage of California or the United States. <br />Built in 1959, this is a late house in the history of the Wellesley Park subdivision of <br />Redwood City; many older examples survive. Accordingly, the house does not represent <br />the early history of the city or of this subdivision. No other patterns of history related to <br />this house come to mind, and thus the subject property does not appear to be eligible for <br />the California Register under this criterion. <br />Evaluation under Criterion 2 of the California Register: Resources that are associated <br />with the lives of persons important to local, California, or national history. <br />Both Ray Spangler and Nita Spangler were important in the history of Redwood City and <br />of San Mateo County. He was very much a hands-on publisher of Redwood City's <br />newspaper, the Tribune, and as such he held the newspaper to a high journalistic standard <br />and promoted many important causes. Numerous local newspaper articles, including in <br />other newspapers than his own, cite his importance in these ways. Accordingly, this <br />house appears to be eligible for the California Register under this criterion for its <br />association with him. <br />13 <br />
