It exemplifies or reflects special elements of the City's cultural, aesthetic or <br />architectural history. <br />As a late house in the Wellesley Park subdivision, this house does not exemplify the <br />City's history in any striking way. Its qualities as an example of the Second Bay <br />Tradition are best considered under Criterion C, below. <br />B. It is identified with persons or events significant in local, State or national history. <br />This house is closely identified with its first owners and residents, Ray and Nita Spangler. <br />He was the long-time and highly influential publisher of the Redwood City Tribune and <br />effectively took positions on many issues important to the city and San Mateo County. <br />She was instrumental in protecting natural open spaces in the county. Finally, she was <br />also an important figure in historic preservation in San Mateo County. <br />C. It embodies distinctive characteristics of a style, We, period or method of <br />construction, or is a valuable example of the use of indigenous materials or <br />craftsmanship. <br />Both on the exterior and the interior this is an outstanding example of the second phase of <br />the Bay Area Tradition, sometimes called the Second Bay Tradition. Characteristic <br />elements in this house include the vertical redwood siding, the broad eaves of the gabled <br />roof, and the exposed rafters. The flat -roofed covering of the entrance porch; and the <br />entire rear elevation with its projecting entrance pavilion and exceptionally broad eaves <br />are the best features of the exterior. With its wooden finish the interior very much <br />reflects the style of the exterior, and both retain very high integrity. <br />D. It is representative of the notable work of a builder, designer or architect. <br />This is an excellent design by the architect Edwin Wadsworth, who was important for his <br />domestic architecture during the 1950s -1970s. <br />References <br />Building permits for this address.
