8.C. - Page 3 of 54 <br />B. It is identified with persons or events significant in local, State or national history <br />This club building is most closely associated with Mrs. C. E. Cumberson and Aileen Finkler. They <br />are important in Redwood City's history primarily for their role in founding the Redwood City <br />Woman's Club. Many other women also contributed to the club during its early years, but <br />Cumberson and Finkler contributed with the most vision and energy. Because of the importance <br />of the club in Redwood City's history and its founders, this building has significance because of its <br />association with them. <br />C. It embodies distinctive characteristics of a style, type, period or method of <br />construction, or is a valuable example of the use of indigenous materials or craftsmanship <br />This building is a fine example of the Craftsman style. The notable features include its hipped and <br />gabled roof, the shingled exterior, the gabled porte cochere, the broad eaves and carved rafter <br />tails, the recessed porch, and the wooden and steel sash windows. The 1939 addition is a <br />contributing feature. When it becomes fifty years old in 2023, the 1973 addition may be <br />considered a contributing feature as well. Generally, properties eligible for listing in the National <br />Register are at least 50 years old. Properties less than 50 years of age must be exceptionally <br />important to be considered eligible for the listing. <br />D. It is representative of the notable work of a builder, designer or architect <br />Charles Miller was a Redwood City contractor and builder during 1910-1916 and again during <br />1927-1928. He built many houses in Redwood City during these years, but only four, besides this <br />club building, can be identified that still stand with good to high integrity. Of the four, the largest <br />and best was designed by architect Hugo Storch, not by Miller. <br />Until more buildings by Miller can be identified, it is premature to rate him as an important <br />Redwood City builder, and to confer significance under this criterion. For this reason, this <br />particular criterion is not identified to determine the historic significance of the building. <br />FISCAL IMPACT <br />There are no anticipated fiscal impacts associated to a landmark designation.
