8.C. - Page 27 of 54 <br />William Kostura, Historic Resource Evaluation of the Redwood City Woman Club <br />1949. The club donates $500 to furnish a room at the new Sequoia Hospital. <br />1949. Membership has grown to nearly 300. One member stated "We participate in <br />all civic affairs, give to all charitable organizations that make an appeal." <br />Unknown dates (many years in the 1930s -1940s?). In the clubhouse are photos of <br />members standing in front of the building, everyone in costume. <br />In recent decades the membership has declined. In 1993 about "three dozen" women, of <br />a membership of about 100, attended monthly meetings. In 2012 membership was 56. <br />This trend echoes that of declining membership in fraternal organizations such as the <br />Masons and the Odd Fellows. Lately the membership is growing again, is now 70, and <br />looks likely to continue growing. <br />Integrity <br />The additions of 1939 and 1973 closely continued the style and materials of the original <br />building, with one exception, namely, the windows in the additions have industrial steel <br />sash instead of wooden sash. The 1973 addition was a rear addition, and cannot be easily <br />seen from the street (though it is prominent from the back yard). In sum, for the period <br />through 1939, the integrity of the building is very high. <br />Regarding the seven areas of integrity that are considered in California Register <br />evaluations, for the period through 1939: <br />The building has never been moved, and so it retains integrity of location. <br />The style and materials, and details are unchanged since 1939, and so the building retains <br />integrity of design, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association. <br />The surrounding neighborhood has seen the loss of some old buildings and the <br />construction of some new ones; overall, integrity of setting is poor through 1939. <br />If one considers the period through 1973, when the rear addition was built, the integrity <br />of the building is even higher. <br />Evaluation to California Register criteria <br />Evaluation under Criterion 1 of the California Register: Resources that are associated <br />with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of local or <br />regional history, or the cultural heritage of California or the United States. <br />20 <br />551 <br />
