From:
Stacey Wagner
To:
GRP -City Council
Subject:
Greystar's South Main mixed use project
Date:
Friday, November 6, 2020 6:36:17 AM
Dear Mayor Howard and members of the City Council,
I'm writing in support of Greystar's South Main mixed use
project as a Redwood City resident, parent of a public school
student, and unofficially, bringing my perspective as a Kaiser
Permanente employee.
Redwood City needs more safe and affordable child care
options at all income levels. Early in the pandemic and
throughout the shelter in place, our medical center staff
regularly asked about the availability of child care.
Many of my son's friends are lower income so
finding affordable child care for their families became
exacerbated when COVID-19 arrived.
Parents struggle with returning to work if they don't have safe
and affordable child care options. And getting employees back
to work and our economy on a path to full recovery will require
safe, affordable child care so parents feel confident leaving
their children to go to work.
Many employees start working at our medical center to
gain experience and ultimately transfer to other medical
centers where the cost of living is lower. Having housing
options at all income levels would help keep them in Redwood
City.
The 147 BMR units would help address those who are
struggling to maintain stable housing and the moderate units
would help employers retain their employees.
The proposed new open space, creek walk, and bike and
pedestrian improvements are wonderful additions
to the neighborhoods around the site — both for employers in
the area and their employees as well as for parents to enjoy
with their kids. COVID-19 has been challenging from a mental
health perspective for many and getting outside boosts one's
mood.
Currently, this area is blighted and does not feel like a
welcoming entrance to our downtown.
