Without child care, many parents and caregivers in San Mateo
County will be forced to leave the workforce, resulting in a potential decrease in economic activity of up
to $3.6 billion in lost wages.
South Main Mixed -Use sets a new standard of developer -funded child care infrastructure which will
attract operators who serve low-income families and is located next to new affordable housing and job
centers which reduces car trips. Redwood City, and every city in the County, can point to this project as
the expectation for new child care in mixed-use projects. Every new slot will make a difference in
supporting Redwood City's economic recovery by allowing parents to know their children are safe and
cared for if they return to work.
SMALL BUSINESS RECOVERY
The "shelter -in-place" orders devastated downtown Redwood City and its small business owners. Many
have already closed and many more may not survive, but those that do need every customer they can
get. The site of the South Main Mixed -Use project is the right place for this type of development and
creates both near-term construction jobs and long-term new residents and office workers. All of these
represent customers that our local businesses will need to survive the economic recession and ensure a
lasting economic recovery.
Franko
Heritagea BankBank of Commerce
SAMCEDA has worked side -b sidith the Cthe of Redd Cit and the Chamber of
side-by-side wCounty, e Cy wooy,
Norman Book, Jr.
Commerce to help businesses survive, including the distribution of $663,000 in emergency grants to
Carr McClellan
small businesses in Redwood City earlier this year. No one is
predicting the death of office in Redwood City or San Mateo County. Office and lab construction
continue unabated in South San Francisco and San Carlos, commercial property sales and leasing
continues at a strong pace across the Peninsula, and major employers are planning for the return of
workers next year.
Companies and workers understand that there will be a return to a new normal at some point and they
will want to return to an office located near a vibrant downtown and Caltrain station. A place like
Redwood City.
Thank you for consideration of this public comment and for your service.
Sincerely,
Rosanne Foust
President and CEO, SAMCEDA
1900 O'Farrell Street, Suite 380 ( San Mateo, California 94403 1 650.413.5600 1 info@samceda.org I www.samceda.org
305
