7.A. - Page 65 of 66
William Kostura, Historic Resource Evaluation for 970 Edgewood Road
Some examples of the Second Bay Tradition in San Francisco
Generally speaking, the best houses in the second phase of the Bay Area Tradition are
found on the peninsula and in the East Bay (see Sally Woodbridge, editor, Bay Area
Houses). Nevertheless, some notable examples are in San Francisco, of which the
following photos are available for this report. As one can see, the buildings are clad in
wood and are distinctly modern in feeling, rather than being rustic or traditional; but are
otherwise quite varied.
Above left: 1 Spruce Street (Campbell and Wong, 1948).
Above right: 176 Palo Alto Avenue (Charles Warren Callister,
1959)
At right: 20 Cherry Street (Campbell and Wong, 1964)
Below left: 1629-1631 Green Street (William Wurster, 1940)
Below right: 3700 Washington Street (Joseph Esherick, 195 1)
These two photographs are by Ward Hill, with permission. —
507
