7g)r0damation Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month WHEREAS, in 2020, an estimated 57,600 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States (6,000 in California), and approximately 47,050 will die from the disease (4,800 in California); and WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer -related death in the United States, with a five-year survival rate of just 10 percent; and WHEREAS, estimates show that pancreatic cancer will rise to the second leading cause of cancer - related death by 2030; and WHEREAS, there is no early detection test for pancreatic cancer and few available effective treatments; and WHEREAS, the average patient diagnosed with late stage pancreatic cancer, which accounts for approximately 80 percent of diagnoses, will die within one year of diagnosis; and WHEREAS, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) is the national organization dedicated to improving the lives of the pancreatic cancer community in Redwood City and nationwide by advancing scientific research, building community, sharing knowledge and advocating for patients; and WHEREAS, PanCAN is determined to improve outcomes for today's patients and those diagnosed in the future; and WHEREAS, the good health and well-being of the residents of Redwood City are enhanced as a direct result of increased awareness about pancreatic cancer and research into early detection, causes, and effective treatments, NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, DIANE HOWARD, MAYOR OF REDWOOD CITY, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Redwood City, do hereby proclaim November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and urge all citizens to join in an effort to raise awareness of this deadly disease and to support the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
