Appendix
4. Develop Adaptation Plan
Identify specific strategies, develop actions and cost estimates, and prioritize actions to increase local
resilience of City infrastructure and critical assets, including community -identified and natural systems like
wetlands and urban forests. Look for synergies between natural processes and engineering solutions.
There is a continuum of strategies available to manage climate change impacts. An adaptation plan should
include a prioritized list of actions (e.g., projects) with a timeline, capital expenditure plan, and framework
for monitoring and adaptive management. Efforts should be made to integrate capital projects, existing
infrastructure, emergency planning, and community services.
5. Ongoing Monitoring and Adaptive Management
Reassess climate change vulnerabilities on a regular basis and modify actions accordingly. This includes
monitoring the effectiveness of current policies, strategies and actions, and keeping up with changing
science, funding opportunities, and regulatory actions. When reassessing, consider the most updated
science available, and the timing of the impact.
Climate Ready SMC has developed a set of climate adaptation strategies and tools for use in planning. These tools
will continue to be updated as new ones are available, including tools for developing climate adaptation plans,
incorporating climate adaptation into General Plans, Local Hazard Mitigation Plans, Capital Improvement Plans,
and community engagement and social equity.
