Appendix
Organic/Food Waste Diversion
In 2016, Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) established methane emissions reduction targets in a statewide effort to reduce
emissions of short-lived climate pollutants in various sectors of California's economy. SB 1383 establishes target
to achieve a 50 percent reduction in the level of statewide disposal of organic waste from 2014 levels by 2020 and
a 75 percent reduction by 2025. The law grants CalRecycle the regulatory authority required to achieve the organic
waste disposal reduction targets. More information about SB 1383 can be found online at:
https://www.caIrecycle.ca.aov/climate/slcp
CA Local Policy
In September 2019, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution declaring a climate
emergency in San Mateo County to highlight the increasingly urgent need for action to address the climate crisis.
The County of San Mateo joined over 1,000 national, international, and local jurisdictions with similar declarations.
The resolution calls for the County to create climate action plans (CAPs) for its government operations and
unincorporated community that will achieve carbon neutrality in advance of the State of California's 2045 goal, and
coordinate with the cities and other local partners in addressing the climate crisis."
City of Redwood City Climate Action Plan 86
