We propose that the Redwood City Redevelopment
Agency again consider granting $7,500 to us to help us with the
organization of our "Celebration of the Peninsula's Diversity: Immigrants
Day Festival" (again, we can discuss the name of the event). The cost of
the day is $15,000, excluding museum staffhours. We have again asked
Safeway to match your contribution. As last year, the Agency will be
credited in our promotional materials. Smaller donations from local
businesses will also be solicited to underwrite some of the museum's staff
time committed to the program.

As you know, among our recent improvements at the History Museum is
the installation of a permanent exhibit gallery dedicated to the immigrant
experience on the Peninsula. This $1 million portion of the museum is
engaging, educational, and highly interactive. The subject is of great
interest to the people of San Mateo County and their visitors. Most people
realize that something like 30% of the people of the County have been
born in another country. Far fewer realize that back in 1880, 30% of the
people of the County were born in another country. Thus the immigrant
experience is both topical and historical.

To complement the display, two years ago the Museum organized an
"Immigrants Day". The committees from the various ethnic communities
that helped us create the gallery assigned representatives to help us.

Last year, seven countries were represented - Ireland, China, Portugal,
Italy, Japan, Mexico, and the Philippines. We scheduled folk dancing on
Courthouse Square, featuring performances of all seven cpuntries. In the
rotunda, we offered craft activities for children reminiscent of the ethnic
groups. Upstairs we had a "taste ofthe seven" with representative foods.
All together more than 1,000 people attended, (as compared with 600
people the year before).

Board of Directors

Karen S.
