January 11, 2021
675 Seaport Boulevard, Redwood City, CA 94063
Mayor Diane Howard
City of Redwood City
1017 Middlefield Road
Redwood City, CA 94063
Re: Agenda Item 8.13. Ferry Financial Feasibility Study and Economic Impact Analysis
Dear Mayor Howard and Members of the City Council,
Seaport Industrial Association (SIA) enthusiastically supports Council's acceptance of the
Redwood City ferry feasibility study and economic analysis. SIA is a membership organization
representing industrial businesses in the Redwood City port area.
This study marks a significant milestone in the long effort to bring water transit service to Redwood
City. Nearly twenty years ago, I joined the Water Transit Advocates of San Mateo County (along
with Mayor Howard) to support ferry service on the Peninsula, anticipating that it would begin in
South San Francisco and be followed by Redwood City. The feasibility and economic analysis
makes a compelling case for realizing that vision.
It was encouraging to see meaningful progress on the project during 2020 — the acceptance of
the feasibility study by the Water Emergency Transit Authority (WETA), and the earlier
Memorandum of Understanding among WETA, the City of Redwood City and the Port of Redwood
City. Now is an excellent time to move forward on the project, with the Port as a willing partner
and plenty of opportunity for the community to provide their input during environmental review
and the implementation process.
Thank you for your leadership in supporting water transit service in Redwood City as a vital
component of the Bay Area's transportation system.
Sincerely,
Greg Greenway
Executive Director
CC: Melissa Stevenson Diaz, City of Redwood City
Kristine Zortman, Port of Redwood City
Seamus Murphy, Water Emergency Transportation Authority
Jim Hartnett, San Mateo County Transit District
April Chan, San Mateo County Transportation Authority
