From:
To: GRP -City Council
Subject: Item 7A, Community wellness /Mental Health" Crisis Response Team, Jan 25 council meeting
Date: Monday, January 25, 20215:59:59 PM
CAUTION: This email originated from outside your organization. Exercise caution when
opening attachments or clicking links, especially from unknown senders.
Dear Council Members:
First and foremost, I would like to thank the Chief for arranging to meet with some of us last
week. He stayed longer than the allocated meeting time to answer our questions. I do
appreciate that very much.
I partnered with ACLU to submit a formal letter of recommendation. As a RWC resident, I
will further add that this MOU is a "Go Slow" approach. The program is not well resourced as
it stands. There is no clear trajectory of ramping up clinicians. There is no clear trajectory of
removing police from the mental health workflow. The goals are not well thought through.
The metrics are not defined. The transparency approach is not outlined. With existing
SMART and PERT programs, 50% of our inmates suffer from mental health issues. Will this
pilot make a dent in this crisis - it is a dent if a drop makes a dent in the ocean. I know you
want to do the right thing, but please don't go so slow.
I will end with an excerpt from the first Civil Rights song from Nina Simone.
Regards,
Somalee
You keep on saying "Go slow!"
"Go slow!"
But that's just the trouble
"Do it slow"
Desegregation
"Do it slow"
Mass participation
"Do it slow"
Reunification
"Do it slow"
Do things gradually
"Do it slow"
But bring more tragedy
"Do it slow"
Why don't you see it
Why don't you feel it
I don't know
I don't know
