88
Page 2

. Downtown Business Groups - Apri/1: Made a brief presentation to members of the
Downtown Business Group about the need for their input on the General Plan. Staff
distributed comment cards and information on the General Plan, and has not received
any feedback as of this date.

. Organized/Regional Environmental Groups: Met with approximately 10 individuals
representing several environmental groups. Global climate change was suggested early
in the meeting by the group as a key issue for the New General Plan. Transit Oriented
Development (TOO) was promoted as an excellent opportunity for Redwood City and
the Downtown Precise Plan was considered supportive to that end; although there was
concern that it does not require affordable housing and the City does not have
inclusionary zoning requirements. EI Camino Real and Woodside Road were discussed
as opportunities for better transit and should have land uses that support transit. In
future community meetings about the New General Plan, the fact of the City's limited
water supply must be communicated so that people will understand the impacts of
development as it relates to water. There was concern that if development is allowed in
areas that are presently not zoned for it, such as the Cargill salt ponds, less water will
be available to other areas such as the Downtown Precise Plan area and transit
corridors. Urban wildlife and the urban forest were considered to be special assets to
be improved andlor supported. Opportunities to enhance existing resources included all
of the City's creeks, but Redwood Creek, especially the area under the parking lot
behind City Hall, seemed to have possibly the most potential, as well as the Hetch-
Hetchy easements for multi-modal trails and bird habitat.

. Child Care Coordinator Interview - April 2: Discussed the role of the Child Care
Coordinator as a technical advisor to the General Plan and reviewed possible materials
for inclusion in the Human Services Element.

. Traffic Consultant Interview - April 2: Discussed data need for traffic model and other
requirements.

. Adult English As a Second Language (ESL) Class at Hoover School - April 14: The
City's Environmental Initiative's Manager made contact with this group and staff led the
class in a session that included an open dialogue on what the group liked and disliked
about Redwood City, what services were important to them, and suggestions on what to
improve. For example, they really liked the sense of community that is prevalent in
Redwood City among Latinos. However, there was a concern about gang activities and
the group suggested better street lighting, the need for more education on to how to
prevent gang activities, and the need for better parks and sports programs for youth.

. Port and Seaport Industrial Association Interview- Apri/21: Members of the General
Plan consultant team specializing in economics met with the Port Director and
Executive Director of Seaport Industrial Association. The overall intent of the discussion
was to determine the amount of industrial land supply necessary to support the
Redwood City economy. The discussion included an overall description of the Port's
geography, uses, transportation improvements, and adjacent industrial areas. Also
they discussed the future needs of the Port, the desire for more compatible uses, and
potential buffer areas for possible adjacent developments.
