Animal Control

Close attention must be given to the presence of burrowing animals, since
they may not be readily detected without a thorough inspection. Burrows
created by gophers, muskrats, opossums, badgers, and other animals can
lead to rapid levee failures during floods. For this reason, an active animal
abatement program needs to be implemented to remove these animals.
Rodent control techniques involving fumigation, bait stations, bait
broadcasting, or trapping have proven effective in certain situations, but
you should always contact the state's Fish and Game Agency,
Department of Natural Resources, or Wildlife Agency to determine which
rodent control procedures are allowable and recommended in the area.
Inspections to detect the presence of burrowing animal activity are

15

April 2008
