<br /> <br />6.2A <br />Page 1 <br /> <br />May 19, 2008 <br /> <br />SUBJECT <br />Application for and acceptance of a $150,000 grant from the California State Coastal <br />Conservancy (Conservancy) for the Redwood Shores Community Library Interpretive <br />Center. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Approve, by resolution, this application and acceptance for grant funds from the <br />Conservancy, authorize the library Director to accept the grant funds and authorize the <br />Library Director or his designee to execute in the name of the City of Redwood City all <br />necessary contracts, agreements, amendments and payment requests hereto for the <br />purposes of implementing the project specified in the grant application. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br />The Interpretive Center will celebrate the natural history of the southern San Francisco <br />Bay through a series of interconnected hands-on exhibits. Families, teachers and even <br />the casual library customer will have an engaging Ieaming experience with every visit. <br />The 540 square foot Interpretive Center design highlights aspects of three natural <br />habitats of the southern San Francisco Bay: Ufe in the Mud, Life in the Water and Ufe in <br />the Air. Each habitat is interpreted through hands-on educational exhibits with <br />explanatory graphic rails and panels focused on resident species and explaining <br />biological concepts such as food webs, camouflage and physical adaptations. <br />Customized illustrations, photos and themes are being developed using information' <br />provided and validated by local educators and scientists. Afllnterpretive Center features <br />are intended to provide education and activities for people of all ages and abilities. . <br /> <br />On April 24, 2008 The California State Coastal Conservancy approved a $150,000 grant <br />award for the Redwood Shores Community Library Interpretive Center. The Califomia <br />State Coastal Conservancy requires Council approval by resolution, of the grant <br />application and acceptance of the grant award, Grant funds will provide funding for <br />nearly half the cost of the Interpretive Center. <br /> <br />The Redwood Shores Community library is now under construction. Final design and <br />fabrication of the Interpretive Center will be undertaken immediately to enable the <br />facility to be complete by opening day in September 2008. <br /> <br />ALTERNATIVES <br />Council may choose not to approve the grant application and acceptance, and <br />consequently becomes ineligible to receive the grant award. <br />
