REPORT

6.1C
..' Page 1

July 28, 2008

SUBJECT
Disposal of Surplus Fire Apparatus

RECOMMENDATION
Approve by motion the designation of two fire apparatus as surplus and authorize staff
to sell the items per City procedure.

BACKGROUND
The Public Works Services Department, in conjunction with the Finance Department,
acts as the centralized collection and storage point for City property that has reached
the end of useful life cycle as measured by department efficiency and effectiveness
standards, and/or is considered surplus.

Government Code Section 37351 and Section 3.5 of the Charter of the City of Redwood
City as amended, permits the sale of any City personal property having an appraised
value of five thousand dollars or more through public notice or public bid for not less
than 90% of the appraised value. Attached hereto is the description of two surplus fire
trucks with an appraised value of more than $5,000 each. Each of these two pieces of
surplus property has exceeded its useful life.

Exhibit "A" - This fire tiller truck was purchased and put into service in 1987. It was
replaCed and taken out of service on June 2008, after 21 years of service and
exceeding its useful life.

Exhibit "B" - This fire engine was purchased and put into service in 1988. It was
replaced and taken out of service on September 2007. after 19 years of service and
exceeding its useful life.

ALTERNATIVES
Continue storing and collecting the City's surplus property which will be financially
detrimental to the City, since surplus property depreciates in value as it ages in the
surplus lot.

FISCAL IMPACT
The revenue from the sale of this surplus property will be returned to the Equipment
Replacement Fund.

~/~

Terence Kyaw
Reel Manager

~6~}
Larry acz
Public Works Services Director

Peler Ingram
City Manager
