PPOI'OSED JULY 1981 MAINTENANCE ELECTRICIAN DEFINITION Performs a variety of co~plex and skilled work concerned with the electrical operations, maintenance, alteration and repair of elec- trical and traffic control systems, including but not limited to, installation of new traffic signals; does related work as required. DISTIN(;UISHIW; CHARACTERISTICS OF TIle CL.Z\SS An employee in this class is responsible for the performance of " skilled level electrical work. The employee is subject to 24-hour call for emergency work. Assignments are received orally and in writing, either in the form of work orders or reports of unsatis- factory opera tion 0 f equipmen t. EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY) Performs electrical ~aintenance for traffic signals and street lights, both underground and aerial; installs new traffic signals; repairs and updates old traffic signals; repairs, services and maintains lighting, power heating, pumps, fire alar~s, communications; repairs, installs and makes additions to existing installations of electrical systems in City buildings; repairs and replaces defective parts in switches and other fixtures and appliances; performs necessary con- struction work relative to electrical ~aintenance, using jack ham~er, backhoe, bucket truck, dump trucK, concrete saw; keeps time and work records. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Good knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, materials and equlp- ment used in electrical maintenance and repair; good knowledge of electrical meters, motors, testing devices and manual and automatic electronic control equipment; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions; good knowledge of the provisions of local and national electrical codes applicable to installation, main- tenance and repair work; ability to establish good workins relation- ships with others; ability to read and interpret specifications, sketches, diagrans and blueprints; ability to maintain records; ability to locate and correct defects in electrical power lines and equipment; physical condition sufficient to enqage in heavy physical exertion outdoors in all types of weather and at considerable height above the ground.
