.mmpomT
.REI. .R

5.1A
Page 1

September 22, 2008

SUBJECT
Public Allies Silicon Valley Agreement for AmeriCorps Service Position at Fair Oaks Community
Center

RECOMMENDATION
Approve by motion and authorize the City Manager to sign the Public Allies Silicon Valley
Agreement for AmeriCorps Service Position at Fair Oaks Community Center.

BACKGROUND
Over the last two years, the City has partnered with Public Allies Silicon Valley for the
placement of an AmeriCorps Public Ally as a part of the Infonnation and Referral Program staff
- expanding from three to four Human Services Specialists.

The addition of the Public Ally has made it possible for the City to better meet the demand for
services at the Fair Oaks Community Center and for our information and referral program to
develop more comprehensive services for homeless individuals and families in our community.
This has been an important contribution to our own City's efforts to assist homeless individuals
and families in the context of the countywide effort to end homelessness (HOPE Plan).

A $25,000 grant from Silicon Valley Community Foundation will fund the continued incorporation
of an AmeriCorps position into the Infonnation and Referral Program for FY 08-09.

The agreement covers the period from September 2008 to June 2009. Redwood City will pay
Public Allies Silicon Valley a total of $15,777 in three separate installments toward the Ally's
stipend.

ALTERNATIVES
Council could make modifications to the contract or decide not to approve the contract.

FISCAL IMPACT

Grant funds have been secured and already appropriated in the Fiscal Year 2008-2009 budget
to pay for the Public Ally placement.

~

U~.) ~'~. ,/'
.
