<br /> <br />6.10 <br />Page 1 <br /> <br />November 24, 2008 <br /> <br />SUBJECT <br />Parking during the Hometown Holidays event <br /> <br />ReCOMMENDATION <br />Approve, by motion, the suspension of parking meter rates in the Downtown on <br />December 6, 2008. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br />On December 6, 2008, the Downtown Business Group will be holding the annual <br />Hometown Holiday event - a parade and festival to celebrate the winter holiday season <br />in downtown Redwood City. The Hometown Holiday event includes a tamale tasting, <br />photos with Santa, musical entertainment, tree lighting ceremony and a movie night at <br />Courthouse Square. The estimated attendance is approximately 10,000 people. Due to <br />the parade route and festival events, much of the Downtown core's parking supply will <br />be unavailable. The Downtown Business Group is requesting the suspension of the <br />parking meters from 6:00 am through 11 :00 pm on the following streets and City-owned <br />parking lots: 1) on all streets bounded by Veterans Boulevard, Brewster Avenue, EI <br />Camino Real and Walnut Street and 2) off-street parking lots - Perry Lot, Winslow Lot, <br />and the Main Street Lot. <br /> <br />City Council may temporarily suspend parking meter rates according to the City <br />Municipal Code Section 20.133: <br /> <br />The provisions of this Division may be suspended form time to time by motion of the City <br />Council in any case where the Council finds that strict compliance would not serve the public <br />interest, including, but not limited to, the use of public streets and sidewalks for celebrations, <br />special public events. celebration of holiday seasons and any other such activity or <br />purposes as the City Council in its sole discretion shall determine. No. 2287, 2, 8-22- <br />2005) <br /> <br />The suspension of parking meter rates for the 2007 Hometown Holidays event was <br />approved by the City Council. <br /> <br />ALTERNATIVES <br />Continue with the on-going activation and enforcement of parking meters in the <br />downtown on December 6, 2008. <br /> <br />FISCAL IMPACT <br />The City would not receive an estimated $1,400.00 in revenue from the suspension of <br />the parking meters on December 6. <br />
