,-P"'."'....."

J

III. THE OLD COURTHOUSE (SAN MATEO COUNTY COURTHOUSE); 2200 Broadway

The Old Courthouse, a Renaissance-Baroque structure, is the third courthouse
at 2200 Broadway in Redwood City. The property was donated to the County
(which uses it for offices) by S.M. Mezes and the Arquello family in 1858.
The construction of this building oc~red in two stages: the first involved
the architectural firm of Dodge and Dolliver in 1903. Before the County was
able to move into the new building, it was almost completely destroyed by
the 1906 earthquake. Architect Glenn Allen was them commissioned to redesign
the building.

During the depression, two annexes were added to the building, necessitating
the removal of the main portico. The eastern and western facades, and the
rotunda maintain their original appearance. The building is in good condition
with only minor interior alteration. The exterior materials are green Colusa
sandstone, sheet copper cornices, and copper dome. The interior materials
are mosaic floors, bronze lamps with eagles, cast-iron ballustrades, oak
benches, green marbled terra-cotta pillars with gold eagle voluted capitals,
and an exceptional stained glass skylight.

rn 311

i .
~l__~

HISTORIC PRESERVATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Page

5
