7C
Page 2

In addition to health issues, the PRCS Commission also discussed enforcement of the
ban. Like all park regulations, we expect this new ordinance wiil be enforced on a
complaint only basis.

Currently, Redwood City Municipal Code Section 25.2.02 (L) and California State Law
prohibit smoking within twenty feet (20') of main entrances, exits, and operable windows
of any park facility, restroom or within twenty-five feet (251) of a Playground, Tot Lot or
Recreational Areas.

The proposed ordinance would amend Section 25.2.02 (L) to completely prohibit
smoking within any City park and would require "No Smoking" signs to be posted in
every City park. The City is already beginning the process of replacing parks signs due
to other rule changes already approved by the City Council.

ALTERNATIVES
Decline the recommendation from the Parks, Recreation and Community Services
Commission. This would result in no changes to the wording of current park
ordinances.

FISCAL IMPACT

New park signs have to be ordered because of previous park rule changes approved by
Council. Therefore, there would be no additional cost associated with the approval of

afJIiLn's~com dation.
