<br />7A <br />Page 3 <br /> <br />ORDINANCE NO. <br /> <br />ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 25.2.02 (L) OF CHAPTER 25, <br />ARTICLE" PARKS OF THE REDWOOD CITY MUNICIPAL CODe <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Chapter 25, Article I. Sec. 25.2.02 (L) of the R"edwood City Municipal <br /> <br />Code restricts but does not prohibit smoking "in City parks; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the United States Surgeon General's 2006 Report on the Health <br /> <br />Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke has concluded the following: " <br /> <br />. Millions of Americans, both children and adults, are exposed to secondhand <br /> <br />smoke in their homes and workplaces despite substantial progress in tobacco <br /> <br />control; <br /> <br />. Secondhand smoke exposure causes disease and premature death in <br /> <br />children and adults who do not smoke; <br /> <br />. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk for sudden <br /> <br />infant death syndrome (SID8), acute respiratory infections~ ear problems, and <br /> <br />more severe asthma; <br /> <br />. Exposure of adults to secondhand smoke has immediate adverse effects on <br /> <br />the cardiovascular system and causes coronary heart disease and lung <br /> <br />cancer; <br /> <br />. S'cientific evidence indicates that there is no risk-free level of exposure to <br /> <br />secondhand smoke; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, secondhand smoke has been classified as a "toxic air contaminant" <br /> <br />by the California Air Resources Board; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services (PReS) <br /> <br />Commission of the City of Redwood City and its Park Rules Enforcement Subcommittee <br /> <br />ATTY/ORO/ORD.312 <br />012009 <br /> <br />1 <br />
