R.Ep.ORT

6.28
Page 1

February 23, 2009

SUBJECT
Final Acceptance - 2007..2008 Slurry Seal Project

RecoMMENDATION
Accept, by motion, the 2007 -2008 Slurry Seal Project, and authorize the release of
bonds and the retention according to city procedures.

BACKGROUND
On June 23, 2008, Council awarded the construction contract for the 2007-2008 Slurry
Seal Project to American Asphalt Repair and Resurfacing Co., Inc. of Hayward. The
project was awarded for a base bid of $410,085.31. The city elected to add an alternate
bid item for Type II Aggregate bringing the total contract amount to $434,058.91.
Construction began in August, 2008. The project is successfully completed in
accordance with the plans and specifications. One (1) change order was issued
totaling $38,421.06. The final contract amount is $472,479.97, and 8.1 % more than the
contract amount initially awarded. Change orders resulted from quantity adjustments
and work on segments of Middlefield Road which was not part of the original scope of
work for this project.

This project resurfaced roadway segments roughly bordered by G Street to the north,
Winslow Street to the east, Marshall Street to the south, and Stafford Street to the west.
Minor asphalt overlay repair work was also performed along the southbound lanes of
Middlefield Road at the intersection with Woodside Road.

ALTERNATIVES
Council may choose not to accept the project or authorize the release of bonds and
retention which would be contrary to the terms of the contract, prior Council action, and
public contracting code.

FISCAL IMPACT
Appropriations for this project have been previously approved by Council in the budget
for Fiscal Year 2007/2008, Transportation (Measure "A") Funds... Street Pavement
Management Program and Transportation Grants (Proposition 1 B) - Street Pavement
Management Program.

~~4-~~-v:~
M.
