Significant progress has been achieved in the <br />County through investments in CaItrain and highway -in1provelnents; however, the <br />task is' not yet cOll1plete. As the econon1.y rebounds and then continues. to g.row, we <br />need to'maintain our, infrastructure to acco111moda'te the accoll1panying traffic <br />congestion' in conUl1ute corridors and on local streets and roads. <br /> <br />Continuing traffic growth also has underscored the hnportance of additional safety <br />n1easures, particularly grade separations along the Ca.ltrain rail line and safe bicycle <br />and p'edestrian facilities. Local transit service, especially for the.elderly and people <br />with disabilities,'has becoll1e increasingly inlportant in cOD1n1unities throughout the <br />County. <br /> <br />The extension of Measure A ",rill provide San Mateo County with the resources to <br />continue shaping the transportation program to best 111eet the needs of County <br />residents. In nearly 20 years since the drafting of the current Tra.nsportation <br />Expenditure Plan, the County has seen the en1erg~nce of a ne\l\r~ set of challenges, which <br />I1lUSt be lTIet if the quali.ty of life in the County is to be preserved. <br /> <br />Develoving the Next Transportation Expenditure Plan <br /> <br />'.? <br /> <br />The Transportation Expenditure Plan for the extension of M.easure A began \,vith a <br />blank sheet of paper and Vias assembled through a process which en1braced the n1any <br />and varied constituencies that n1ake up San Mateo County. Beginning in the Spring of <br />20031 we e111barked on a process that included 111elding technical evaluations \-\Tith the <br />feedback fronl the public and elected officials throughout the County. <br /> <br />'; <br />. .i <br /> <br />The TA provided an inlportant forunl for public input into the Tta.nsportation <br />Expenditure Plan by sponsoring focus groups, three public workshops and hosting <br />nlore than 30 ou.treach events to civic organizations, service groups and neighborhood <br />associations.
