5. SPECIAL ORDERS OF THE DAY — <br /> A. California Park & Recreation Society (CPRS) Awards: (1) Excellence for a <br /> Marketing Campaign for powntown, (2) Neighborhood and Community Life for the <br /> Teen Events in Courthouse Square, and (3) Economic Development for powntown <br /> Programming — Chris Beth, Superintendent, Parks, Recreation, and Community <br /> Services Department. <br /> Chris Beth, Parks Recreation and Community Services Superintendent, announced that <br /> Redwood City received four awards instead of three. The fourth was a surprise award <br /> titled "Creating Community" - Award of Distinction - presented to those agencies that are <br /> committed to finding new directions, strategic action planning, and creating new <br /> opportunities. He explained that this is the equivalent of "Best Picture" award. Mr. Beth <br /> provided an overview of what these awards represent and enumerated the myriad events <br /> that take place downtown. He also stated that during 2008 partnerships with community <br /> organizations were ubiquitous and he hopes these continue. <br /> B. Presentation - Downtown Programming Sneak Preview by Parks, Recreation, and <br /> Community Services Department and Community Development Services <br /> Department — Chris Beth, Superintendent, Parks, Recreation, and Community <br /> Services Department and Pat Webb, Housing and Economic Development <br /> Manager. <br /> Ms. Webb congratulated the Parks Recreation and Community Services Department on <br /> the awards received. Ms. Popovich, Redevelopment Project Manager, elaborated on the <br /> 2009 events and partnerships including the Downtown Business Group and the Sing Tao <br /> Chinese Newspaper. She also announced a continued partnership with Target for family <br /> day events. Ms. Popovich provided an overview of the"2009 New Programming." <br /> Vice Mayor Howard announced that the Farmers Market will open the first weekend in <br /> April. She thanked the Parks Recreation and Community Services Department for the <br /> brochures they provide for such event. Council Member Aguirre thanked Mr. Beth and <br /> said that the surprise award was an unexpected reward. She was at the award ceremony <br /> with Mayor Foust and Council Member Hartnett. Mayor Foust congratulated <br /> Superintendent Beth for becoming President of the California Park & Recreation Society. <br /> She also thanked Ms. Radcliffe, in the audience, for all her work as President of the <br /> Downtown Business Group and her continued collaborations with the city. <br /> Mayor Foust announced that last Saturday a playground was built at Mezes Park thanks to <br /> a partnership between Parks Recreation and Community Services Department and <br /> KaBoom. She provided details on the ribbon cutting ceremony and how meaningful of an <br /> event it was. <br /> 6.
