<br />6.18 <br />Page 1 <br /> <br />REPORT <br /> <br /> <br />April 27, 2009 <br /> <br />SUBJECT <br />Temporary suspension of parking meter rates in downtown <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Approve by motion the temporary suspension of parking meter rates in downtown on <br />Saturday, May 2, 2009. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br />The City of Redwood City is partnering with the international Chinese language <br />newspaper Sing Tao Daily to bring a street fair to Downtown on Saturday and Sunday, <br />May 2 and 3, 2009. The Sing Tao Street Fair will include musical entertainment, <br />Chinese performance groups, a children's play area, and up to 200 vendor booths. The <br />estimated attendance is 10,000 people each day. Due to the street fair layout, some of <br />the downtown on-street metered parking will be unavailable. <br /> <br />Redwood City's Downtown Events Team is requesting the suspension of parking meter <br />rates on May 2,2009 from 10:00 am through 6:00 pm on the following streets and City- <br />owned parking lots: 1) all streets bounded by Veterans Boulevard, Brewster Avenue, EI <br />Camino Real, and Walnut Street, and 2) off-street parking lots: Perry Lot, Winslow Lot, <br />Main Street Lot, City Hall lot, and Library Lots A and B. <br /> <br />City Council may temporarily suspend parking meter rates according to the City <br />Municipal Code Section 20.133: <br /> <br />Sec. 20.133. PROVISIONS FOR TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF METER <br />RATES: <br />The provisions of this Division may be suspended from time to time by motion of the City <br />Council in any case where the Council finds that strict compliance would not serve the <br />public interest, including but not limited to the use of public streets and sidewalks for <br />celebrations, special public events, celebration of holiday seasons and any other such <br />activity or purpose as the City Council in its sole discretion shall determine. No. 2329, ~ 1, 5-12-08) <br /> <br />ALTERNATIVES <br />Council may choose to enforce parking meter rates in downtown on May 2, 2009. <br /> <br />FISCAL IMPACT <br />The City will not receive an estimated $1,400.00 in revenue from the suspension of the <br />parking meter rates on Saturday, May 2. There is no loss of revenue on May 3 as <br />meters are not activated on Sundays. <br />
