DES:dj~ 05/03/95 (111/39) <br /> <br /> ORIGINAL <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 12459 <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING PARTICIPATION IN CALIFORNIA GOLD <br /> DISCOVERY TO STATEHOOD SESQUICENTENNIAL <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, a sawmill construction superintendent by the name <br />of James Marshall, while inspecting the flow of water in a <br />millrace on the south fork of the American River, discovered gold <br />on January 24, 1848; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the cry of "GOLD!" that echoed from the Sierra <br />Nevada foothills was heard throughout the nation and around the <br />world resulting in the California Gold Rush of 1849, the largest <br />human migration in history; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, California's economic and geographic importance to <br />the United States was such that California became the 31st state <br />in the Union on September 9, 1850; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Honorable Pete Wilson issued Executive Order <br />W-74-94 on January 24, 1994, establishing the California Gold <br />Discovery to Statehood Sesquicentennial Commission to coordinate <br />and oversee the 150th anniversary of these monumental events from <br />January 1, 1998, through December 31, 2000; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is important to present to the people of the <br />state, the nation, and the world a heightened sense of <br />California's unique human history, its ethnic diversity, its <br />enormous energy, breath-taking natural beauty, and innovative <br />technology; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Sesquicentennial will stimulate economic <br />vitality through tourist-related job creation and promote a sense <br /> <br /> <br />
