Light Camera <br />Increases Safety." <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Approve the Chief of Police's Response to the San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury <br />Report "Red Light Camera Increases Safety." . <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br />On August 12, 2008, the San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury informed the Chief of <br />Police that it was conducting an investigation into Redwood .City's Photo Red Light <br />Enforcement Program. On March 12,2009, the Civil Grand Jury filed its report with the <br />County Superior Court pertaining to the traffic safety effectiveness of red light cameras <br />in Redwood City. The report concluded, among other things, that that the decision to <br />install the inaugural camera system was supported by data collected by the police <br />department, and that the number of collisions at the intersection of Whipple Avenue and <br />Veterans Boulevard has decreased. The report also made six recommendations to the <br />City Council. The Court wrote that the City must submit comments regarding the <br />report's findings and recommendations to the Court no later than June 10, 2009, and <br />that the respOnse must be approved by City Council at its regular meeting.
