CitvCler~ <br /> <br />June 1, 2009 <br /> <br />SUBJECT <br />Consolidated General Municipal Election to be held on November 3, 2009. Candidate <br />Statements and Related Matters. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Adopt resolutions calling the November 3, 2009 General Municipal Election; <br /> <br />1. Resolution calling General Municipal Election and requesting Board of <br />Supervisors, County of San Mateo to consolidate General Municipal <br />election of the City of Redwood City with the Consolidated Municipal. School and <br />Special District Election and all other local elections to be held on November 3, <br />2009. <br />2. Resolution authorizing execution of the contract with the County of San Mateo for <br />certain election services relating to the Consolidated General Municipal election. <br />3. Motion to require a deposit of $500.00 for a candidate's statement to be <br />translated and printed in English. Chinese and Spanish as required under <br />Section 203 of the Federal Voting Rights Act. 42 U.S.C 1973aa-1 a section 203. <br />All amounts are to cover actual estimated costs. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />Redwood City Ordinance No. 2078 requires that General Municipal Elections be held in <br />November of odd-numbered years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday. The City <br />Council is requested to consolidate the General Municipal Election with the <br />Consolidated Municipal, School and Special District Election to be held on the same day <br />for the purpose of electing three (3) City Council Members for the full term of four (4) <br />years each. <br /> <br />The California Elections Code provides for consolidation of local elections, ordered by <br />one of the jurisdictions calling an election on the same date in the same or overlapping <br />territory. Redwood City has consolidated previous elections with accurate, efficient and <br />cost-effective results and it is recommended that the City Council order consolidation for <br />November 3,2009 General Municipal Election. <br /> <br />The San Mateo County Elections Office provides certain election services for the City of <br />Redwood City and other agencies and districts by the execution of a contract. <br /> <br />1 <br />
